How Will BCause Work?

Operating Model

BCause is set to be a boutique-sized grocer with big personality.

    • Located in Greater Victoria

    • ~6,000 sq. ft. full-service grocery store

    • Open 6–7 days per week

    • Hours: 6:00am – 8:00pm

    • Staff team: approximately 15–25 employees

    • Supported by structured volunteer programming

  • Fresh produce, meat and seafood, dairy and refrigerated goods, frozen foods, pantry staples, bakery items, locally produced and small-batch goods.

  • BCause aims to provide groceries at a significant savings over the traditional leading grocery stores in town. BCause intends to achieve this through a combination of nonprofit reinvestment, operational efficiencies, strategic partnerships, and cost-reduction across all levels of the organization.

Revenue Model

BCause operates on a hybrid nonprofit model

  • Grocery sales (core operating revenue).

    • Charitable donations

    • Grants and foundation funding

    • Corporate partnerships and sponsorships

    • Community fundraising

    • Food recovery and surplus programs

    • In-kind contributions and volunteer support

  • All surplus revenue is reinvested into:

    • Lowering grocery prices

    • Expanding food access initiatives

    • Improving operations

    • Scaling future locations

    • Employees to ensure respectful wages and health benefits

    No profits are distributed to private shareholders.

Community Impact Model

BCause functions as both a grocery store and a community food infrastructure hub.

  • BCause aims to champion both local and Canadian small-scale producers, providing retail access for emerging food businesses that are not yet part of mainstream grocery distribution systems.

  • A structured volunteer program will support operations and community programming, creating a more inclusive and community driven retail environment. Volunteers will play an integral role in food waste diversion programs while also helping to create the fun atmosphere of a community space.

  • BCause will implement a circular food system including:

    • Food rescue and repurposing

    • Composting programs

    • Redistribution partnerships
